After the intervention of thirteen artists, João Silvério, curator of the Empty Cube, has instigated a new series of projects which is open to designers. The Miguel Rios Design office is inaugurating this new phase with the piece Pirson: “Je pourrais aussi regarder la chaise comme un object (parmi d’autres)...” , with this participation being part of its cycle of collaborations with the worlds of art and architecture.

Invited to intervene in one of its spaces of choice, the CUBE, and taking the relationship between Art and Design as its leitmotif, the theoretical/conceptual framework of this project in the study of mental schemes of impossibilities versus the function of the object can be synthesised.

For this, Miguel Rios and his team discussed the research and conclusions of Jean François Pirson, Donald Judd, and Louis Albert Necker in the dualities of art and design, minimalism and optical illusion, perception and impossibilities. The outcome is an object whose multiple dimensions are demonstrated at one and the same time. The intention with this work is to give form and substance to ideas and results, through the praise or disagreement with the authors mentioned, and going beyond originality, aesthetics and functionality.

Pirson: “Je pourrais aussi regarder la chaise comme un object (parmi d’autres)...” is taken more as a statement of the office’s reasoning process, imbued in its multiple influences and as a vehicle for interpreting the ideas and convictions of the head designer.
