Banco Nacional Ultramarino building João Loureiro post-card collection

(SUM)one is the final outcome of a collaboration between Miguel Rios Design and the artist Ângela Ferreira. Taking the building that houses the newly-inaugurated MUDE - Museu do Design e da Moda in Lisbon as a starting point, a whole series of exercises in appropriation have been generated. These have involved architecture, the plastic arts and design, the political, economic and social contexts and the historical relations between Lisbon/Portugal and Maputo/Mozambique.

(SUM)one is a piece that synthesises the various facets of a project that embraces the ‘all in one’ concept explored by Joe Colombo in his 1963 Mini Kitchen – one of the major references of Miguel Rios, head designer of the atelier.

Working closely with FABRI Cozinhas, which gave him all the assistance and technical advice necessary, (SUM)one may be described as a table plus storage and two seats in a functional unit that can be used by two people: as piece of kitchen furniture, a mini-office, or a place for meals. Its structural form and the materials used (Corian®, glossy and matt lacquered MDF, nappa and metal fixtures by Blum®) mean that it can be used indoors and outdoors.
